Picture of the site of our future high tunnel.

We got funded!

I am starting this blog to just keep a record of our high tunnel project, it's not for informational use or as a guide as to what to do.  I know how I am, and this will probably be more of a record of what I have done wrong and the comedy of errors that will accompany this project.  That seems to be a common theme with the majority of my projects, especially if I have no idea what I'm doing.

We were informed today, January 29th, 2013, that we got funded to be part of the NRCS high tunnel program!  This is great news, now we have the ability to extend our growing season in the Spring and Fall.  This will provide more produce for our family as well as giving us the opportunity to sell our produce in the community (another supplementary income for the family).

We were the only high tunnel application to get funded in this area, I'm so excited about moving forward with this project!

We also got funding for the micro irrigation program, this is great for us because of our limited water supply.

So far, I have not done very much to prepare for the high tunnel, I did spread some soil, a couple months ago, to start leveling the site.  But other than that, we have been in a holding pattern to find out if we got funded.  Now that we have this great news I can start back into the planning and site prep stages (weather permitting).

I am also taking a Master Gardener class on Thursday evenings, under the guidance of our excellent, local, Flathead Reservation Extension Agent.  I am learning a lot and hopefully I can use the information and make less mistakes the first time around in our growing season.

I haven't decided what to grow yet but I am sure it will be a wide variety, I am interested in growing herbs, zucchini, tomatoes, and whatever else we think would be tasty and good.

We also have a regular, outdoor garden that we will use to keep our berries, corn, potatoes, etc.

I have never done a blog before, so this should be an interesting experience, hopefully this will be entertaining to read and not too frustrating for me as go about this project.
